Medicare Prescription Drug Plans provide benefits based on coverage “levels.” In Level 1, you make manageable copayments or coinsurance for each prescription until your total drug costs have reached a certain amount. When you’ve reached that amount, your coverage moves to Level 2. This is known as the “coverage gap” because you are required to pay a higher portion of your drug costs during this period. Once you’ve reached a specified out-of-pocket limit, you move on to Level 3, where your costs significantly decrease with low, predictable copayments.
